Prato becomes Common until XII century, in Renaissance age, the economic, artistic and cultural increase the city. The Emperor Castle the only example of Sveva architecture around Center-Northen Italy, is the imposing structure in alberese stone, built in relief on the Saint Marie of the Jails square. Built up, between 1242 and the 1248 from the Emperor of the Sacred Roman Empire Federico II, on one previous fortification by Count Alberti of Prato, after the siege and destroyed of the 1107 caused by Matilde di Canossa, Marchioness of Tuscany. In front of to the castle, is raised the Basilica of S. Marie of the Jails, one of the greater work of art of the Rinaissance age, constructed between 1485 and 1492 by Lorenzo il Magnifico is an architectonic work of art with harmonious proportions. Inside we can find works of Andrea della Robbia (XV century) and of B. Buontalenti. The Dome constructed in X the century with the name of Pieve Santo Stefano di Borgo al Cornio; in the 1211. The elegant facade, covered of alberese alternated with horizontal green marble bands applied from 1385 to 1457 to the Romanesque facade. Outside on the left there is the chapel in which conserve the Sacro Cingolo, and the portal have been adorned by a large arch in withe terracotta, carry out by Andrea della Robbia (1489).
